ASU System Trustees Honor Retired ASU-Newport Chancellor, Approve ASU-Beebe Land Management Agreement

07/20/2021

NEWPORT, Ark. — The Arkansas State University System Board of Trustees today honored a former chancellor and approved plans for property on two campuses during a special meeting on the ASU-Newport campus.

Dr. Sandra Massey, who retired in December as chancellor of ASU-Newport after seven years of service, was designated by the trustees as Chancellor Emeritus in recognition of her contributions. Additionally, the “Hangar” complex in the Student/Community Center on the ASU-Newport campus will be renamed the Sandra C. Massey Center for Student Success.

Trustees agreed to enter into an agreement with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission to manage a 160-acre tract of land that is owned by Arkansas State University-Beebe and borders the northwest portion of the Cypress Bayou Wildlife Management Area, which is already managed by AGFC. The 10-year agreement was previously approved by AGFC on June 17.

Both ASU-Beebe and AGFC sought the agreement to provide assistance and recommendations for land management, including timber harvesting, signage, and overall control and maintenance of the property. The agreement also allows AGFC to assist in the management and protection of birds, fish, game and other wildlife resources on the ASU-Beebe property. AGFC will bear the costs of its management activities under the agreement.

Henderson State University was authorized to sell three parcels of property in Arkadelphia that were determined not to be essential to the operations of the institution. They include four acres at the intersection of Millcreek Drive and North 15th Street and two parcels at the intersection of McNutt Street and 8th Street.
