Same Sex Married Couple Employee Benefits Update (Posted 7/1/2015)
On Friday, June 26, 2015, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that under the Fourteenth Amendment, all states must grant equal marriage rights to two people, regardless of sex, and that a state cannot fail to recognize a marriage created in another state between two people of the same sex.
Arkansas State University System employees, who have a same-sex spouse and who were married on or before June 26, 2015, have a 31-day window from June 26, 2015, to July 26, 2015, to add their spouse to their ASU System benefit plans. Employees who marry after June 26, 2015, have 31 days to add their spouse to their ASU benefits. This includes medical, dental, vision, dependent life, supplemental life and flexible spending. Other benefits may be available, but a spouse may be subject to approval through evidence of insurability. A same-sex spouse is also eligible for a tuition discount.
To enroll your spouse, please contact your Human Resources Office. You must provide a copy of your marriage certificate to complete your enrollment. Your benefits will become effective on the first of the month, on or following completion of enrollment.
Important Message: Effective April 1, 2015, the Arkansas in-network Memphis hospital will change from Methodist Healthcare to Baptist Memorial.
